Family Life and Everyday Practicalities in Ulaanbaatar
The posts listed above come from an older family-lifestyle archive, covering topics such as sun safety, children's identity photos and dressing little ones for outings. Those originals were written for a different country, but the questions behind them are ones Ulaanbaatar parents ask too: how to keep children comfortable outdoors, how to sort out official paperwork without wasted trips, and how to make family events easier to manage.
Dressing children for a city of extremes
Ulaanbaatar has one of the widest temperature ranges of any capital. Summer days can be bright and surprisingly strong in UV because of the city's altitude, while winters are long and bitterly cold. A simple layering approach works year-round. Start with a breathable base layer, add a warm mid layer such as a fleece or knitted jumper, and finish with a windproof outer shell. In summer, a light long-sleeved top, a hat and sunscreen protect children during park visits and countryside trips. In winter, cover hands, ears and faces, and keep an eye on indoor-outdoor transitions so children do not overheat on buses or in heated buildings.
Photos and documents for children
Identity documents for children usually need recent photos that meet specific size and background rules. Before you visit a photo studio or government office, check the current requirements with the issuing authority. Bring the child's birth certificate and a parent's ID, and try to go at a quiet time of day so small children are not kept waiting in long queues.
Getting around with little ones
Traffic and crowded pavements make planning important. Allow extra time, carry snacks and water, and choose routes with safe crossings. Our district pages can help you get to know your local area, and the services overview points to the kinds of public help families often look for. If you would like to support other parents in your neighbourhood, see how you can volunteer with community programmes.
